Research

The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) is a consortium of public and private Funding Partners whose aim is to determine the 3D structures of proteins of relevance to human health, and to promptly place this information into the public domain without restriction.

The specific goals for SGC Stockholm include
  • To run a highly efficient process for gene-to-structure, allowing the determination of approximately 30 novel structures per year.
  • To establish a collaborative network, and processes, to strengthen structural biology research in Sweden in particular, and related biomedical research in general.
  • To build on the knowledge generated internally in order to establish chemical biology as a means to dissect and investigate novel biological pathways.

Biology Areas

Two Structural Biochemistry teams (PI:s Pär Nordlund and Herwig Schüler) pursue individual biology programs. The teams provide the scientific driving forces to the project and are responbible for structural milestones. The Swedish funders have nominated a reference group of Swedish researchers to aid SGC Stockholm identify protein target areas. Examples of biology areas are given below. For complete listings visit the homepages of the individual teams.

  • Nucleotide metabolism (Nordlund)
  • Domains in Apoptosis and Receptor Signaling (Nordlund)
  • Phosphoinositide and Lipid Signaling (Nordlund/Schüler)
  • PARPs (Schüler)
  • Amino Acid metabolism (Schüler)
  • ATPases [Hsp70, RNA helicases, AAA] (Schüler)
High Throughput Process and Infrastructure

The Biotechnology unit maintains a state-of-the-art high throughput process for protein production and crystallisation.

Core Scientists provide senior expertise within their specific areas and maintain vital infrastructure.
